Shingle is a term that refers to any roof made with shingles or shakes. They typically come in either asphalt or wood.

Asphalt shingles come in a variety of styles, colors, levels of durability, and manufacturers. They will be either organic or non-organic(made of fiberglass), dimensional, or three-tab.

Wood shingles are most commonly made of Western Red Cedar and come in ether shingles or shakes in several different sizes and with varying exposures. Shakes are thicker and rougher, and they vary in size and shape because they were split rather than sawn from the log. Shingles are thinner, smoother, and come in a more consistent size and shape.

Shingle roofs require periodic maintenance to maximize their service life.
